March 2010 Press Release

For Immediate Release – Tuesday March 23, 2010

Lots of Big Happenings for OSDA

Well so far 2010 has been a big year for the Old School Derby Association. A year full of promise and growth.

First off congratulations to Penn Jersey Roller Derby on their acquisition of a new building in which to do their training and hold future games. Located near Temple University, this facility is large enough to house both a flat track and a banked track. Yes you heard things right, a banked track. For the first time in many a year, a banked track has returned to the city of Philadelphia. And a beautiful thing it is too. The guys and girls of Penn Jersey have already begun to train on the bank and hope to have banked track games up and running before the end of the year. Penn Jersey has also opened its doors to run banked track training sessions for several of the other OSDA leagues who have also expressed an interest in getting a banked track.

Next up, congratulations go out to South Jersey Derby as they add a new training facility, the Derby Den, to their holdings. This great facility offers an excellent training ground for the guys and girls of South Jersey Derby to build confidence and develop the skating skills that OSDA and South Jersey are known for.

OSDA also added a 2 new leagues to its growing ranks. Dead Girl Derby KC from Missouri has officially joined the OSDA movement. We are proud to welcome them as OSDA expands beyond the East Coast. With one successful game already in the record books, we wish them an excellent season as they bring the excitement of Old School to a new audience. And of course we would be remiss if we did not mention the wild and crazy pirates of Chesapeake Roller Derby. Their mission is to bring a fun family atmosphere back to Derby and judging from their first few games, the crowds are liking what they are seeing. It is a pleasure to welcome them aboard as an OSDA member. And we aren’t done yet. Discussions are underway with leagues from Virginia (giving OSDA two leagues based out of Virginia) and Florida.

The OSDA would also like to announce the appointment of Joe Nardone to Director of Publicity for the OSDA. Jersey Joe as he is know is a long-time fan of Roller Derby and has been one of the OSDA’s biggest supporters. Joe has been there handing out fliers and spreading the word since the beginning. It is with great pleasure that the OSDA has made Joe’s job official. Congratulations Jersey Joe.

The OSDA has many more developments and announcements in store for this year all culminating in our championships in November as last year’s OSDA champion Man’s Ruin hosts in New York. We hope to have an extra special guest announcer for this event if all the details can be worked out. So keep your eyes open for future press releases as the OSDA makes 2010 a banner year for Roller Derby.

OSDA Acquires a New Member and New Events Planning Director

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 20 2009

It is with great pleasure that I welcome to the OSDA our latest league, Chesapeake Roller Derby. Still in the organizational stages with their first season planned to begin in January of 2010, this organization already numbers over 30 people and is growing larger everyday. Skating out of the Baltimore area (Westminster, MD), the league has already acquired a Charity Partner, the American Breast Cancer Foundation, for its opening season plus an incredible facility, Shipley Arena, for its games. Run by Brandy Tomhave and her husband Jeff, I anticipate great things for this league. The OSDA is proud to have them aboard.

It is with further pleasure that I announce Brandy’s addition to the OSDA Executive Board as Co-Director of Events Planning. She will be joining Liz Lazenby in this position. Due to Brandy’s extensive business knowledge as a partner in Black Eyed Susan Skate Shop and her time on the track skating with Charm City in her alter ego of “Marzipain”, the OSDA feels honored to have her accept this position. We feel there can be no better choice to help develop OSDA’s major events for 2010.

One needs only spend a few minutes talking with Brandy and Jeff to realize their love for the “simple game” of Roller Derby. Their faith in the OSDA and their intensity in wanting to do it the “old school” way are incredible. They are sure to spread the cause of OSDA where ever they go. Once again, please join me in welcoming Chesapeake Roller Derby to the OSDA.

2009 OSDA Championship Press Release

The OSDA proudly announces the first ever Co-Ed Roller Derby Tournament to determine its top 2009 National Championship Co-Ed team. Teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Richmond will compete for the title named for the legendary Atkinson family.

As one of the leading families in all permutations of Roller Derby to RollerJam, the Atkinson Family has contributed much to this sport. It is our intention to honor them for their contributions.

There are two other major awards that will be given, the Female OSDA MVP will receive the Judy Arnold MVP Award. Many consider Judy Arnold the greatest women’s Roller Derby skater to ever grace the banked oval.

She began skating in 1960 and her career quickly began to soar. Judy Arnold soon became the captain of the Philadelphia Warriors in 1967, where she remained until she retired in 1975.

The Male OSDA MVP will receive the Arnold Schoen MVP Award. Although the demise of the Banked Track cut short his career, to us in the OSDA, he is every bit a superstar. We hope that he will be as honored by this tribute as we are to have him associated with OSDA.

Arnold Schoen will be present that night to present the award. These games will involve both male and female skaters skating on the track together. Members of these teams will be made up of skaters from OSDA leagues, Man’s Ruin Rollergirls (Chester, NY), Richmond Derby Demons (Richmond, VA), South Jersey Derby and the Penn Jersey She Devils.

The Old School Derby Association (OSDA) was officially founded in March of 2007 by Ken Sikes with the help of the Penn Jersey She Devils Roller Derby League and their coaches, Judy Sowinski and Arnold ‘Skip’ Schoen. OSDA combines the most thrilling aspects of both old and modern rulesets to create a fast-moving, ultra-defensive game.

The OSDA currently has member leagues in PA, NJ, NY, MD, VA, and AZ and is constantly growing. It is the goal of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years.
